There were two merits. The first was the honor and the glory of being one of Caesar's "boys" a he used to cal them. The second (and probably most important) merit was the loot. Caesar had an excellent won/lost record and when a Roman army was victorious, looting was part of the victory and all the men shared in the spoils.
