Ancient Greece was a civilization that existed from around the 8th century BCE to the 6th century CE. It was known for its advancements in areas such as philosophy, art, architecture, and democracy. Key figures from ancient Greece include Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, who significantly influenced Western thought. The city-states of Athens and Sparta were two of the most powerful and well-known in ancient Greece, with distinct political and social structures.
Athens was a city-state, meaning it was *the* city in the area is governed. Ancient Greece wasn't a united area, but consisted of several city-states that controlled varying areas of what is now Greece. So Athens was the only city in it's area.
Ancient Greece covered slightly different areas at various times through history, although broadly it covered the same area as modern-day Greece does today. You can see maps in the Sources and related links section, below.
