It is uncertain as to whether or not there were 3: there were 3 GIFTS of the Magi, though.
melchor, gaspar and baltazar
The three wise men, "The Magi".According to Christianity, the three wise men followed the star to Bethlehem. The three wise men traveled to witness the birth of the boy called the son of God.
Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior.
The "wise men" who traveled to Bethlehem have been known as magi, kings, astrologers, star gazers, (ancient day astronomers?). Scripture does not allude to their profession, just that they were gentile seekers, bearing gifts.
wise men
The wise men, also known as the Magi, traveled from afar to find Jesus. They followed a star, known as the Star of Bethlehem, which guided them to the place where Jesus was born.
They were "astrologers from eastern parts" and they are not numbered. (Matthew 2:1, 2, 11) Notice that the account states just "wise men," not "three wise men," and that they first traveled from the east to Jerusalem, not to the birth city of Jesus, Bethlehem. By the time they finally reached Bethlehem, Jesus was a "young child"-no longer a baby-and no longer in a stable but in a house.
It could be a matter of days, from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, we must remember that they traveled on camels, and they do not move fast like horses do.
Bethlehem, Israel.
Bethlehem
The magi are referred to as the three wise men and they traveled to find Jesus Christ our savior. God guided them by the Northern star.
the star of Bethlehem
