General Lee had waken well before the break of dawn on the second day of battle at Gettysburg. He returned to Seminary Ridge but could not formulate a plan of action until the light of dawn gave him a clear view of the battlefield. Whatever that specific plan might have been, Lee's mindset was one of conducting a set of offensive operations against Meade's Army of the Potomac.
Lee commanded the Confederate forces.
No Gettysburg happened two years after the war started. It was the second Confederate invasion of the North.
General Robert E. Lee led Confederate forces at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The order of battle continued with Lieutenant General James Longstreet commanding the First Corps, the Second Corps under Lieutenant General Richard S. Ewell and the Third Corps under the command of Lieutenant General Ambrose Powell Hill. An independent Cavalry Division was under the command of Major General James Ewell Brown Stuart.
Confederate General James Longstreet was hampered in his plans to assault Union troops on July 2 1863 because of an unforeseen delay. Longstreet's plan for July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg was to make an assault as early as possible on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Although the head of his army approached the soon to be battle zone at 7 am, a good deal of his army was almost three hours behind his leading column. As a result of this, Longstreet's assault did not begin until the late afternoon. Because of this delay, Union General Meade was able to bring in reinforcements which gave Meade a numerical superiority.
Gettysburg, of course. July 1, 2 and 3, 1863.
General Pope (Union) and General Lee (Confederate).
On the Confederate side, the second General was P.G.T. Beauregard. (His commander, Sidney Johnston, was killed at this battle.) On the Union side, Grant's second-in-command was Sherman.
General Sidney Johnston, killed at that battle. And his second-in-command P.G.T. Beauregard.
None. Jeb Stuart was at the Battle of Gettysburg with his cavalry getting whipped by a much smaller force led by General Custer. Stewart was attacking from the north while Pickett's division attacked from the south. The two forces never joined in the middle as Lee had planned.
Confederate General Goode Bryan graduated from West Point in 1834. Among the 36 graduating cadets that year, Bryan was ranked 25th. Bryan served in major Eastern Theater battles including the Peninsula campaign, Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Gettysburg. His service effectively ended there as a wound blinded him totally. He finally left the Confederate army in 1864.
Gettysburg had the largest number of dead and wounded of any battle in the Civil War. General Lee had moved into Union territory for the second time- most battles were fought in the South. This was an attempt to create political discord in the Union that would result in a negotiated surrender. That hope died after the Confederate forces lost, and the battle was considered a turning point of the war.
During the First Battle of Chattanooga the generals were: Union Major General Buell and Confederate Brigadier Generals Morgan and Forrest; during the Second Battle: Union Major General Rosencrans and Confederate Braxton Bragg; during the third one: Union Major General Grant and Confederate Braxton Bragg.
