Some say it was because of slavery. However, being Abraham Lincoln had a slave, that was not the case. Others have said that Lincoln wanted to "make the United States united." This statement is more agreeable. The reason that the war even started was because the Confederates were being supplied arms by the British. Last time I checked, The United States did not really like the British at the time.
