* The reasons are relatively simple. God actually exists and those who believe in Him had at the first good reason to believe in Him since they had personal dealings with Him. To say that someone believes something does not necessarily imply that it is without foundation or basis in fact. Many people today are willing to believe all kinds of things which are entirely without foundation, except according to their own philosophical system and supported by others who believe as they do and reject all contrary evidence, even if scientific. The early believers in God, those who had direct dealings with Him also faced a majority in their day who were non-believers, despite contrary evidence. It would have been much better for them to not believe than believe in many ways, but they chose to follow what they knew for a fact. The same continues today and people still have dealings with God today since He is the living God.
* Men created gods to explain things which they could not. For instance, they could not explain why the sun rose and set every day so there must be a Sun God, etc... They did not know that the sun caused the corn to grow so they would pray and make sacrifices to the Corn God. The notion of gods and its attendant spiritual immortality were also conceived to give men comfort that death was not the end of their existence, though, by definition, it is. In essence, it is a remnant of the species' intellectual infancy in which a lot of the species remain. The last 400 years of scientific progress have been a steady stream of disprovings of the church's doctrine i.e. the idea that the universe revolves around the earth.
