Canada West didn't join confederation. It was the name given to what had been Upper Canada before it joined with Lower Canada to become the Province of Canada. This united province then confederated with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in 1867 and was split into Ontario and Quebec. One of the reasons Canada sought confederation with its neighbouring colonies was to resolve its own political deadlock between the primarily English Canada West and the primarily French Canada East. Other influences included the desire to build an inter-colony rail road, as well as the desire to strengthen British North America against attack by the United States.
British Columbia did want to join Confederation, but BC had not been part of the original negotiations. Therefore Britain told BC to wait until the new dominion became established. Four years later, BC joined Confederation.
Why indeed? The majority of Nova Scotians did not want to join which was made very clear when they elected representatives wanting Nova Scotia to leave Confederation.
To commemorate the confederation on July 1, 1867.
The Northwest territories joined the confederation in 1870. The Northwest Territories joined because the Hudson Bay Company, which owned those lands, sold them to the Canadian Government. Manitoba was included in those lands. The Northwest territories also joined for the railway Canada offered.

they joined confederation because they were promised a railroad from nova scotia through to canada west....they would get extra defense from the other province....since america just stopped free trade theyd be able to trade with the other colonies....nova scotia was totally for confederation
They did not want to have responsible government, they wanted cash payment per capita and a railway.
They joined to be releived of their financial debt, and because of British pressure to join the Confederation instead of becoming it's own nation, because the British feared an independent Newfoundland might seek union with the U.S to escape aforementioned debt.
