The people of Late Bronze Age Canaan worshipped a small number of deities, including El, the father of the gods, Baal, Asherah and a few others. The consensus of scholars is that these were the same gods as were worshipped by the early Israelites, except that for the Canaanites, Yahweh was entirely unknown. The connection here, is that almost all scholars believe that the Israelites were not invaders, as portrayed in The Bible, but were rural Canaanites who left the region of the rich coastal cities and settled in the hitherto sparsely populated hinterland.
