Serfs owed several things for their land. Chief among these was labor. The larger the land holding the more labor a peasant owed, but the labor obligation was typically no more than two days per week, and those with small holdings owed less. Peasants with adequate income could generally convert their labor obligation to a cash payment, or hire another person to do their labor in their place.

An annual cash rent was also owned, based on the number of acres the peasant held in the fields. In addition to the cash rent, other small payments in goods were due at various points over the year. This might be in the form of grain, animals, eggs, firewood, etc.

Although it did not go to the lord, peasants also owed a tithe to the church of 10% of their agricultural produce. This was not a voluntary donation, as a modern tithe, but was essentially a tax owed to the local parish. In theory this was to support the local priest and maintain the church building, etc, but the goods collected for exceeded the financial needs of the local parish, and were a major source of income for the church.

What duties did the lord of manor and his serfs owe each other?

The serfs were supposed to work on the manor and do whatever their superiors told them to do. The lord was supposed to allow his manor as a place of protection for the serfs - during the time of feudalism, this was very much needed - and a place to live. The lords got the better end of the deal.

What duties did a lord of a manor and his serfs owe one another?

Serfs were required to work the lord's land for food, as well as taxes and manor labor. The lord was a general governor of his people, set to protect the serfs and settle disputes between them.

Why did lords free their serfs?

The relationship between lords and serfs was not the same as the relationship between owners and slaves. The lords and the serfs had duties and obligations to each other. That being the case, there were times, such as when there were too many serfs for the lands the manor had, when it was in a lord's economic best interest to free serfs who wanted to be freed. Some of the serfs would be likely to want to leave and others want to stay and not have to deal with the insecurity of not having a place to live. At other times, such as after the Black Death, lords who did not have enough serfs would try to entice those of other lords away from them. In such a case they offered a better deal, which might have included their not being serfs any more. Serfs who wanted to could sometimes make themselves free by leaving the manor and staying away for over a year. Strangely enough this was the law in some places.

Were the serfs forced to fight in the army after the emancipation in Russia?

In theory, serfs were supposed to be protected by their lords. This might have meant that in theory, the serfs should not have got involved in wars. Another way of interpreting this theory was that the serfs were to be protected by organizing them for defense. But one way or the other, the serfs got involved in the wars, either as participants or as victims. There is a link below to the section on serfs' duties in an article on serfdom. According to it, there is some debate on whether serfs could be legally required to fight in combat. My bet is that the laws varied depending on time and place, and that any rule protecting the serfs was bound to be broken as required by the lord.
