Peter the Great 'westernized' Russia by introducing European technical knowledge, fashion and ideas to Russia; Alexander II abolished serfdom in Russia, freeing some 15 million people from slavery.
He just wanted to take control governmental over the Church just to prevent the Church leaders from influencing policy and to some extent it made it possible to establish absolutism. He founded the Holy Synod, a governmental body from which the monarchy and the influential nobility could control the Church and the sphere of religion.

The reign of Czar was only so long. Sometimes they left some business undone as Peter did. Catherine was able to attain his goal of westernizing Russia.
In 1745,Catherine the Great married then Grand Duke Peter Romanov. He became Tsar Peter III in 1762. He also became dead later in 1762, when Catherine, her lover and some friends had Peter murdered so she could become Empress.
Peter the Great of Russia was multilingual; he spoke Russian, which was his native language, as well as French and German, which were common among the European elite of his time. He also had some knowledge of Dutch and English, acquired during his travels in Western Europe. His language skills facilitated his efforts to modernize Russia and engage with Western powers.
He was the Russian Czar (also spelled Tsar by some sources) from 1682 to 1725; he gave himself the name "Peter the Great" because he saw himself as a dominant and powerful ruler, who did much to modernize Russia.
