Ming dynasty ruled China from A.D. 1368 to 1644, a period of Chinese rule between two foreign conquests. It was preceded by the Mongol Empire and followed by the Manchu dynasty. Ming rulers restored traditional institutions, such as the civil service, which the Mongols had suspended. During the Ming period, Chinese authority extended into Mongolia, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Ryukyu Islands. Ming means brilliant in Chinese, and the period was important especially in the arts. The imperial palace in Beijing's Forbidden City reached its current splendor largely through the efforts of Ming architects. Artists also produced exquisite porcelain, bronze, and lacquerware. During the final century of the Ming dynasty, increasing numbers of Europeans began visiting China and opening it up to foreign influence.

The word Ming means "brilliance". The Ming Dynasty brought China out of Mongol rule, and Emperors tried to erase Mongol influence in China. They also rebuilt, restored and refortified the Great Wall of China. Internal problems and Manchuran invaders led to the downfall of the dynasty. The word Ming means "brilliance". The Mng dynasty was founded by Chu Yuan-chang in 1368. The Mongol authority had collapsed by that time and this period can be considered as prosperous as regards the territorial expansion and explorations. During the Ming dynasty, China made a lasting contact with Europe. It was a flourishing period in terms of culture, esp arts. During this period, they built on the ancient Great Wall (the original building started in 210BC) as we can see today. They established Beijing a capital city as well. The period lasted until 1644, and was followerd by the Manchus.
