Thomas Jefferson decided in favor of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 from France. The three main aims of purchase were to gain trade access for the US to the port of New Orleans. Secondly Jefferson wanted to get rid of French presence in North America and lastly to gain free passage to the Mississippi river. France had decided to sell the land because of a slave uprising in Haiti and 'The Seven Year War' which it had entered into against Britain.
