Mayflower and Speedwell. The Speedwell is the lesser-known ship that was supposed to go with the Mayflower. But upon departure, the Speedwell began to leak, so it had no choice but to turn back. The freedom-seeking pilgrims previously on the Speedwell had to ride on the Mayflower with the people already on the boat, which is why many stories say the living conditions aboard the Mayflower were poor and very crowded.
