In modern art and culture, they are literally, horns, typically from a bull.

There is no evidence, archaeological or otherwise, that vikings attached horns or wings to their helmets when raiding another country.

The majority of Viking Age drinking horns were most likely from domestic cattle and held less than half a liter of liquid. The Sutton Hoo burial's substantially larger aurochs horns would have been the exception. We pay honor to the Viking drinking horn by making real mead that is loyal to its pedigree and history. Drinking horns, like horned helmets, were primarily used for ceremonial purposes and were impractical otherwise.

Viking helmets did not really have horns on them. The idea was started in Hollywood and was a prop idea, not based in history.
