In 1629, Charles I dismissed Parliament and sanctioned the anti-Puritan persecutions of William Laud, an archbishop.
The Puritans began building towns in Massachusetts in 1630. The Puritans were part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. One group came in 1629 and another group came a year later.

On June 12, 1629, the flagship of the Massachusetts Bay Company arrived in Salem to officially found the new colony. The company was founded by English Puritans, most of whom were educated and wealthy. A fleet of eleven ships brought hundreds of settlers to Salem. John Winthrop became the first governor of the colony.
The Puritans settled in Massachusetts, after seeking religious freedom from England. By the 1630's, 20,000 people migrated to Massachusetts.
