Well, the habitantgs had to face pressure from the seigneur about population growth, paying fines, getting water (sometimes trading with neighbors to do it), lasting through harsh winters etc.

the challenges of new France are about the trade so what was happening is that the white people were willing to trade arms like guns and stuff like that for fur and then most of the time when people from Montreal would look for fur they would say no let the peasants do it for us so then that's how it would happen.
