When mixing the colours Red, Purple and Orange, I will assume that you are using equal amounts of each and that the secondary colours are true mixes. Red is a primary colour, so in this equation I will list it as 2 parts Red. Purple is a secondary colour, so in this equation I will list it as 1 part Red + 1 Part Blue. Orange is a secondary colour, so in this equation I will list it as 1 part Red + 1 part Yellow. Your equation therefore gives us: 4 parts Red + 1 part Blue + 1 part Yellow = a medium tone, warm brown.
mixing red blue and green light yields white light because as a prism shows us that white light contains all of the colors and recombining all three of the primary colors of light gives you white again
An art piece, done in black and white can have every bit as much, and in some cases more visual impact than the same piece rendered in colour. It is easy for the human mind to quickly see an interpret a colour piece, where a black and white piece allows us to see form, stark contrast and other things the artist is trying to display.
