What will happen if phytoplankton was extinct?

Few clues...

  • no more phytoplankton => no more zooplankton => no more fishes and even less whales => no marine ecosystem
  • no more phytoplankton => no more carbon fixation in the ocean => increase of 1/3 in the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere
  • no more phytoplankton => no more oxygen production in the ocean => only bacteria can survive, and decrease of 40% in the global oxygen production on Earth.
