The accumulated food may be stored in the stem tissues. If there are developing fruits, the fruit may be the storage organ. A apple producer repeatedly won the apple contest at the state fair. His secret method was to select well shaped apples on a few branches and girdle (remove the phloem) the branch with the selected apple(s). The apples would grow larger and much sweeter than other apples on the tree!
