Generally pie filling is room temperature when placed in the pie crust. In many cases, the crust is partially baked, then the room temperature filling is added. If one places hot filling in an unbaked crust, the filling could become over-cooked before the crust has finished baking.

Blind bake a pie shell?

When you bake an empty crust. You can either prick the crust all over the bottom and sides with a fork. This will keep it from shrinking. The other way is to fill the crust with dry bean or rice. This will do the same thing. Some people have bean that are used just for pie crusts and reused time after time.

How do you cook phyllo tart shells?

It depends on what you are planning to do with them. If you mean the already prepared tart shells, you can bake them on a cookie sheet for about 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown, and then fill them with whatever you want. If you're filling them with something like a spinach/feta combo, just saute your onions and spinach and whatever else first, mix in some cheese and fill the baked cups. Or, you can make the filling ahead, and fill the cups up and then bake them. It works either way.

Do you bake a pie crust before filling blueberries?

It helps to soften the blackberries and it is a contribution to the entire pie. The best thing I have found in my own experience is to take your berries and slice them in half then create a caramelized 'sauce' from added sugar for taste and consistency. To caramelize you would take your sliced berries and put them in a shallow sauce pan adding sugar to thicken the juice and flavor from the berries. Make sure you put it on the lowest setting possible for heat as to not scold the berries nor sauce. Hope it helps. If all else fails, a good can of pie filling is a safe fail system :)

How do you make a homemade pie?

If you've never made one, I suggest you start with a ready made crust. You can get them in the refrigerated section of the grocery store near the butter and margarine. Roll one out and line a pie plate. Fill it with you favorite pie filling. You can also get canned pie filling for your first attempt. If it's a fruit pie like apple or cherry, roll out a second crust and cover the filling folding under the edges all around the pie. Bake it at 400F for about 40 minutes or until it's browned on top. Let it cool before you cut it. When you get the basic steps down, you can try more complicated recipes.

What is a single pie crust?

A single pie crust is a crust that will fill the bottom of the pie tin - or cover the pie on top - but not both. A double pie crust requires about twice as much dough, and is enough to cover both the bottom and the top. Some pies, like pumpkin, typically have only a bottom crust. Others, like apple pie and meat pies, use both a bottom and a top crust. The top crust functions like a lid on the pie, helping to contain the heat while the contents bake.
