For example this is an unbalance equation where one side has more mass than the other, which is unfinished: H2 + O2 = H2O The finished equation or balance would look like this: 2H2 + O2 = 2H2O We can now know how much of hydrogen we need and oxygen to make a certain amount of water. If we would use the unbalanced equation, we would only get 1 mole of water with some left over oxygen.
