A legislature or assembly was typically chosen by the people in a colony to make laws and set taxes. Members of this group were elected or appointed representatives who were responsible for governing the colony on behalf of its inhabitants.

(ex. presidents, governors, senators)(Oh and btw ignore the senators answer above this one because while they are right that a senator is in a direct democracy that does, by no means, answer the question asked.)
An Assembly is a part of the government consisting of people who have been elected to make laws. They discuss issues and make decisions affecting a particular region.
An assembly, or group of citizens that helps make laws is called a diputacion

Parliament (the group of representatives in a country can be called in different names in each country, the important is that they are the people who have been elected by the citizens to represent them in the main assembly, which has the legislative power, i.e. the branch that has the power tho make laws.)
