On the Great Seal of the State.
The state seal is round. It depicts a settler plowing his field, with imagery of the Falls of St. Anthony, Norway pines (the state tree), and a setting sun. A Native American is shown on horseback riding toward the settler. The state motto appears on a ribbon on top of this picture. The surrounding border includes the text "The Great Seal of the State of Minnesota". The date the state was founded (1858) is at the bottom.
The arch of the Constitution is supported by three pillars representing the three forms of government--executive, legislative and judicial. The words "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation" is the state motto. All are protected by a guardian which appears to be a Revolutionary War soldier. The date "1776", the date of the Declaration of Independence, replaced the date "1789," which was the year the seal was adopted, in 1914.
