John (the baptist) followed in the footsteps of his father, he was a priest. All the priests of the Hebrew tribes were of the tribe of Levi of the house of Aaron. You will find the account given in Luke chapter 1 concerning his father Zacharias and his mother Elisabeth (who was also the cousin to Mary).
