There is a referendum being held today - 18 September - within Scotland asking voters in Scotland if they want to leave the United Kingdom and become an independent country. Passions have been high and polls suggest that the vote will be close. It's a bit like Californians or Texans being asked to vote on leaving the US and becoming independent countries again. They could probably survive economically but would the US be better off with them in the Union or outside it?
not fun

Most Californians live in the southern region of the state, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange County. This region is known for its milder climate, diverse economy, and cultural attractions.
The only state rich enough would be California, but they would probably have a Spanish-speaking majority. So the well-off Californians would not be motivated to secede.
