An archaebacteria is a single-celled organism having some characteristics of bacteria and some characteristics of other organisms such as fungi, plants, and animals. Archaebacteria have been found in animals guts, compost piles, and other very unpleasant places. Some live in deep-sea hydrothermal vents in extremely high temperature and pressure where little else can survive. They use a process called chemosynthesis to obtain energy from chemical reactions with hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg gas) and other inorganic compounds. At the bottom of the food chain, they are eaten by clams, tube worms, mussels, and other animals that live near the vents.
