adding external protrusions to a wing (such as fuel pods, water tanks, and missiles) would?

Increase drag and the amount of thrust needed to move the airplane (Apex)

When Adding external protrusions to a wing (such as fuel pods water tanks and missiles) would be useful but what could one drawback be?

The air molecules would not flow easily around the object and would create more drag.

Adding external protrusions to a wing (such as fuel pods water tanks and missiles) would be useful but what could one drawback be?

It can weaken the wing, it creates additional drag, and will produce a larger radar reflection.

Why does Airbus a 380 not have winglets?

Winglets have typically been added to existing wing designs to increase the total lift and reduce the vertices created by the wing tip. Airports expressed a desire for wingspans not to exceed 80m as this would cause major problems with gate and taxiway designs. The Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 79.65m, so adding winglets would not have been an option and the wing was also designed from scratch to reduce the aerodynamic need. To reduce the wing tip vortices, the A380 wing has 'wing tip fences', small vertical wings that extend above and below the wing tip.

What external structure allows birds to fly?

The external structure is the wing. Its bones are so not heavy that the wind takes the bird up and allows it to fly.

What is spoiler and flap and difference?

The simple answer is, flaps extend below and to the rear of the wing from the trailing edge and actually change the geometry of the wing, at the same time increasing drag and lift. Spoilers rise out of the top of the wing and kill lift without changing wing geometry, or adding too appreciably to drag.
