The standard SV has handlebars (as opposed to clip-ons, like a racing bike) and has an upright riding position, which will significantly lower your chances of "spilling" the bike. If you can't deal with the looks of a "naked" bike, go to the Kawasaki Ninja 650 R. It is a little bit more expensive and has little bit less power, but still has the previously mentioned attributes of a good first bike. My first bike was a 2002 SV650 and I put 13,000 miles on it without it ever touching the ground. Ride smart, assume the worst, and always leave room for error; yours and other's!
