This is such a wonderfully complex story that there are many ways to answer. I have a feeling this question is meant to answer a school question for someone who doesn't want to read the story, but that's OK. The title suggests to me that the grandmother has this gigantic image of what makes a person of quality, and yet her own son is a dishrag of a man and her grandson is a brat. The good man in this story, in spite of her prejudices, is the Misfit. In the end, the grandmother sees it but too late. His line, something like "She'd have been a good woman if there was someone there to shoot her every day" shows us everyone has his/her own prejudice about what constitutes "good."

In "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, the author explores themes of morality, redemption, and the consequences of selfishness through the interactions of a dysfunctional family and a violent criminal. The story ultimately challenges the reader to reflect on the complexities of human nature and the idea of true goodness in a flawed world.

The short story by Flannery O'Connor has an overall religious theme, typical of O'Connor's writings. She explores the questions of what is a good man, and what is forgiveness and redemption. I think the theme is somewhat man versus his or her own nature. The Grandmother and the Misfit seem to be versus each other, but that is just window dressing. The real action is going on within each of the characters... does the Misfit have anything inside that will save him? ... Does the Grandmother? Is the Grandmother redeemed at the end because she found love in her heart for the man who had just butchered her family...? And, then, can we help to save each other? Was there ever a chance, even a small one, that the Misfit would be changed by what the Grandmother said?
