Where did reconstruction take place after the civil war?

The period after the American Civil War when the southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union; 1865-1877Reconstruction was the period after the American Civil War in which attempts were made to solve the political, social, and economic problems arising from the readmission to the Union of the 11 Confederate states that had seceded at or before the outbreak of war.Pres. Abraham Lincoln planned to readmit states in which at least 10% of the voters had pledged loyalty to the Union. This lenient approach was opposed by the Radical Republicans, who favoured the harsher measures passed in the Wade-Davis Bill. Pres. Andrew Johnson continued Lincoln's moderate policies, but enactment in the South of the black codes and demand in the North for stricter legislation resulted in victories for Radical Republicans in the congressional elections of 1866. Congress then passed the Reconstruction Acts of 1867, which established military districts in the South and required the Southern states to accept the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. Southern resentment of the imposed state governments, which included Republicans, carpetbaggers, and scalawags, and of the activities of the Freedmen's Bureau led to the formation of terrorist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Knights of the White Camelia. By the 1870s conservative Democrats again controlled most state governments in the South. Though Reconstruction has been seen as a period of corruption, many constructive legal and educational reforms were introduced. The Reconstruction era led to an increase in sectional bitterness, dissension regarding the rights of blacks, and the development of one-party politics in the South.

How was reconstruction both a success and a failure?

The Reconstruction Act of 1867 sought to reunite the South with the Union. At the end of the Reconstruction period, equal rights between the races remained an unresolved question and it failed to modify Southern society and redistribute wealth.

What is the mackerel brigade?

The "Mackerels" [The Mackerel Brigade] were a gang of juvenille delinquents in Memphis, TN from about 1862 - 1878. Whether or not they were war orphans or actually belonged to families will probably never be known. The gang had been a source of annoyance in the city for some time during the war, probably arising after Federal occupation. While not popularly considered to be the same thing as guerrillas or bushwhackers, probably because they were not, most likely, armed, it is tempting to think of their actions as "juvenile-urban bushwhacking." It would seem their activities had no political aspect and their thievery was conducted as a matter of survival, there being a shortage of asylums for orphans in Memphis. They (earliest gang of this name; several gangs followed that were also generally referred to as mackerels, but the 1st gang by this name was gone more or less by 1869/70 and what remained of it took to the Miss R under the name of "Memphis Mackerels" and were a roving band of river thieves from that point; Jake Ackerman was run out of Memphis for good in 1873) were reputedly led by a boy named Tom Porter (aka "Sub") who was eventually shot and killed by the Memphis Police Dept. in March, 1868. Jake Ackerman (Jake the Jew or Jew Jake) was also a ring leader in The Mackerel Brigade. He later became a rather notorious thief in Omaha, NE as well as in other major Western cities. Jake was shot and killed by his estranged wife in Memphis, TN in April, 1890. He was 38 years old at the time. Tom Porter was 19 when he was killed by the Memphis Police. Jake is buried in the "evildoers" section of the Old Jewish Cemetery (Temple Israel Cemetery now) on Old Hernando Rd., Memphis, TN. His grave stone is marked only with the initials "I.A." Tom Porter's burial place is unknown, but is very likely in the old pauper's cemetery that used to be beside the Old Winchester Cemetery (Memphis, TN) which fell into disuse in the 1870s. Tom was probably from St. Louis, MO originally. Jake was from Little Rock, AR, but came to Memphis, TN during the federal occupation of the city between 1862-1865.

What were the long-term effects on families after world war 2?

Well, what comes to my mind first is that a lot of their parents were fighting in the war. This would be very emotionally stressful, I would think. Another thing to consider is that while their fathers were away, they would be living in a one-parent home. Not sure about other affects the war had on children. After all, I am a child myself, and haven't done a whole lot of research yet. ;)

What is the difference between liability insurance and directors and officers liability insurance?

If you mean the difference between General Liability (GL) and Director's and Officer's Liability (D&O), GL typically covers your products, premises and operations, advertising and personal injury liability. D&O covers the liability arising from the operations and decisions of the directors and officers of an organization. Because directors can be personally liable for their decisions, whether for a corporation, limited liability company, non-profit or other form of an organization, D&O provides specific coverage for their liability.

What is Reinsurance clauses LGT 397?

This is a reinsurance wording clause commonly used in Liability treaty reinsurance. It excludes coverage for liabilities arising in the USA or Canada, but provides a limited write-back of coverage for certain products liability/public liability/employers liability and (in the case of the latest version of LGT 397) personal liability where such coverage is incidental to the underlying policy. - The reason for that is the widespread endeavour to immunize non-US-related reinsurance treaties against US-jurisdiction.
