If in the cooling mode, it could be a burning up compressor, if in the heating mode, it could be a cracked heat exchanger. If the latter, turn the heat off and call a contractor, as that could be a life threatening situation, as carbon monoxide (colorless, odorless gas) could be coming in to your home.
If it is a new unit, it could be the oil of fabrication being burned off, which is not any cause of concern. It could be dirt and dust from the summer being burned off in the first use of winter.
A change of season heating and cooling check is a good idea, and most companies will do these quite reasonably priced. Get a quote first.
