Your dog's tongue is not supposed to be cold. Like most animals, the salive on a tongue may lead someone to believe that a tongue is cold because the saliva has been exposed to cool air. But if your dog's tongue is genuinly cold, it's time to take him to the vet!

From reasearch: Those black spots on a dog's tongue are merely deposits of extra pigment. They're very common; more than 30 pure breeds have members with spotted tongues, and they can occur with any mixed-breed dog. It doesn't necessarily mean there's Chow Chow dog in their bloodline, though that's a popular notion. (There's a good chance that dogs with spotted tongues have darker spots on their skin too, underneath their fur.)

The spots can be "stable" (remain the same throughout the dog's life), or they can fluctuate, becoming more or less pronounced over time.

In rare cases, "black tongue" can be the symptom of an illness, especially if it appears suddenly. If you have any concerns, you should have a vet check your dog.

From personal experience: I currently have two pups that are the offspring of a Rottweiler/Lab mix dad and a Labradoodle mom. Neither parent has spots on their tongues, but one of the pups was born with a solid black tongue, and the other has spots on his tongue that started out tiny, and are spreading as he grows.

When a dog is hanging out its tongue because it is hot, its tongue gets larger and the dog will pant. These quick breaths will cause the tongue to evaporate moisture which in turn cools the dog's tongue. As blood flows through the tongue, the blood is cooled off. It is then transported back to the body, which helps lower the dog's body temperature.

Because they are thin, and have a large surface area relative to the amount of tissue and the amount of blood flowing through it, so they lose heat faster.
