The 2 Reasons I can think of are a Weak Plunger Spring, bad plungeror too Hot of a Load in the Gun.
You would be better served to have a rifle of this age and vintage caliber visually examined by a gun collector that specializes in Marlin rifles.There are too many variables that could effect the value of such a nice old Marlin lever action rifle.
That would be a model 1889, Marlin serials are "different" I believe it was made in 1893, but I'm not a Marlin expert...

The serial number should be on the lower tang, under the lever. Open the lever and look where it meets the tang.
The Marlin model 57M which was made from 1959-1965 has had no reliability problems that I am aware of.These were nicely made lever action rifles.I would say if there is any doubt as to the function of this rifle,it would be wise to have a competent gunsmith look it over before firing.

In order to determine the exact value of a Marlin model 1892 22 caliber octagon barrel lever action firearm, a couple factors would need to be taken into consideration. Most importantly, the condition of the firearm.
if the rifle was manufactured in 1894 it would be black powder.
