The traffic lights impacted the world because it gave some rules in driving and so there were not that much accidents to happen.
If traffic lights are present but are not working (power failure) drivers are SUPPOSED to treat each intersection as if there is an all-directions stop sign. They rarely do that.
Garrett Morgan See website: http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blgas_mask.htm ---- The world's first traffic light was operating in London, England, even before cars were invented. It was a revolving gas-lit lantern with red and green signals, but in 1869, the light exploded, injuring the policeman who was operating it. In the early 1900s Garrett Morgan, an African-American living in Cleveland, Ohio, developed the electric automatic traffic light, originally based on a semaphore-system. Shortly after this, Detroit police officer William L Potts developed the first 4-way three colour traffic light using red, amber, and green railroad lights.
* The disadvantages of traffic lights r * Traffic lights can cause a chaos on the roads.* Also cause a huge traffic
Yes and no.African-American Garrett Morgan is credited with inventing the electric automatic traffic light which was based on semaphore. The system was quite different to another system invented by a Detroit police officer by the name of William Potts. He was the first to develop the first 4-way 3-colour light system, and it was installed in Detroit in 1920.However, both of these systems were preceded by traffic lights that were around even before cars. The very first traffic light in the world was located at a London intersection in 1868, and was a hand-held revolving gas lantern with red and green signals. This was not an entirely successful experiment, as the light exploded early in 1869, injuring the policeman who was operating it.
Garrett A Morgan patented his "Three-way Traffic Signal" in 1923. He lived from 1877 to 1963, so he was 46 when he invented the Traffic Light. He sold his invention to General Electric for $40,000.
