Charon was the ferryman of hades. For the price of a coin he would ferry the newly dead to hades along the river styx. If the newly dead couldn't pay they would have to walk along the bank. Which would take over 100years. In Greek Mythology people would be buried with a coin in their mouth so if they went to Hades they could pay Charon and be feried across
