Most likely the entire planet would die shortly after. Bacteria have a role to play in almost every single thing that happens on the planet Earth. For example, we as humans couldn't digest food since that bodily function is dependent on methanogens. Once something dies, it's bacteria that breaks the remaining body down into it's constituent nutrients which are then used to support plant growth. Without those nutrients, once the plants use up whats in the soil already there would be no way for them to get more. Bacteria form the foundation of the Earth's entire ecosystem. It just couldn't survive without it.

Eventually, all life would get extinct because bacteria are the primary decomposers and without them plants would not be able to get raw materials from the soil. Then plants die. Later, animals (including humans) dies because they are dependent on plants for food. I think you got it.

In a word, no. The human body (along with many, many animals on earth) use basteria in their system to their advantage. They are produced by the body to eliminate foreign bodies (read:disease) and to digest food, among other things.

Well, it wouldn't be instantaneous, but pretty much everything else would die too.

We depend on bacteria for our food. You yourself have helpful bacteria living inside your intestines that help you to digest your food. Without them, you'd be malnourished and eventually sicken and die. Other animals have similar bacteria and many, many animals and protists eat bacteria directly. Plants also depend on helpful bacteria to help take nutrients into their stems. They might evolve and survive without them, but pretty much everything else would die out from starvation.

Unless life could evolve to cope with it at the same rate as the extinction of thebacteria, it would be disastrous, since bacteria are responsible for a vast range of processes.

What do you think will happen if all the chloroplasts in the cell of a plant have been destroyed by a kind of bacteria?

If all the chloroplasts were to be killed by bacteria, the plant would die in a matter of hours because it won't be getting food and the nutrients that it will need. The bacteria will take over and kill faster than it would have if the chloroplasts would have if they had just been destroyed. - Marrissa
