The loss of one species can effect the rest of the ecosystem and to disastrous results in tons of ways. The giant panda is the natural predator of the bamboo. If the giant panda were to become extinct in China would be overrun with bamboo.

The koala is the sentinel animal for forest-dwelling species in Australia: basically, if the koala becomes extinct, whatever is responsible for its extinction will cause the demise of other fauna and flora as well.

Habitat loss is the reason koalas are under threat. And the reason for that is human expansion. As their habitat is depleted, koalas are forced to spend more time on the ground seeking new food trees or seeking mates. This makes them prone to dog attacks and motor vehicle accidents. Younger male koalas are particularly vulnerable as they occupy poor-quality habitat at the fringes of the core breeding colonies and are thus vulnerable to the threats mentioned above as well as starvation.

Another major threat to koalas is the sexually transmitted disease Chlamydia, the spread of which is probably exacerbated by the increased stress placed on koalas just to survive in urbanised areas.

Do brown hyenas and koalas live in the grasslands of south Africa?

Hyenas do, but koalas do not. Koalas are endemic to Australia alone. They are found in the wild in the eastern states. Koalas also cannot live in grasslands, as grasslands do not support the eucalyptus trees on which koalas depend for food and shelter.
