Hippos and alligators don't live in the same regions. Hippos do kill crocodiles, but they don't eat them.

HIppos can only live in and along rivers, so most of the Sahara would be inhospitable. However, along the Nile River, as it passed through the Sahara, created a suitable habitat for hippos. However, due to human activity, hippos no longer live there.
