What would happen if we didn't have micro organisms?

Um... a lot of things.

One horrible example would be that things would rot much slower or not at all. This would cause all of the worlds carbon dioxide to become quickly locked up in dead plant matter. However, new species would have to quickly evolve to take the saprotrophic niches.

Thankfully this can't happen.
