It depends on who you are and who is the target of your lie. If you are a person of great wealth and political power, typically nothing happens if you are caught lying, there might be some scandal, but mostly it is forgotten. If you are in a relationship with someone, they might consider the lie as a betrayal of trust and end the relationship.
