A 1% decrease in ozone will result in a 1.2% increase in UV-B from the Sun arriving on corneas, and the DNA of all surface dwelling creatures. There would be a statistically difficult to pin-down increase in cataracts, melanomas and other cancers, and famine (loss of arable land and/or loss of viable crops).

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide and methane. At natural levels, they keep the earth's temperature at a comfortable level suitable for human existence. Climate scientists say that a reduction in the amount of these gases in the atmosphere would result in fairly rapid global cooling, while an increase results in higher global average temperatures - global warming.

A:Reductions in greenhouse gases would not have any effect on global temperature for thousands of years. The most abundant and significant greenhouse gas on earth is water vapor which accounts for 95% of the greenhouse effect. The body of science shows that global temperature changes occur over a thousand years before any changes in CO2 levels, so if there was a significant change in greenhouse gases, the effects would take millennia to be seen. A:Confusion is massive and prevents any appropriate action on this issue. Water vapor is a short term greenhouse gas. The sun warms the ocean and turns the water into a gas (water vapor). That gas over the next few days will rise up into the upper atmosphere where it cools. As it cools, it gives up its heat in the upper atmosphere and returns to a liquid and falls as rain. Much of the heat in the upper atmosphere is lost into space.

Some people believe that more solar radiation will release more water vapor and as it takes that heat into the upper atmosphere it will lead to global cooling. In their view the earth is undergoing a cooling period not warming.

Carbon dioxide behaves differently. Again, sunlight hits the earth and warms it. Carbon dioxide receives this heat and reflects (re-radiates) it back down warming more earth. In effect, carbon dioxide traps the heat, keeping it on the earth and warming it more.

If people were able to reduce the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere, there would be more ice on the ice caps and on the glaciers and sea level would fall.

Near zero net effect. Ozone is a very small player as far as greenhouse gases go. Absorption of UV-B in the stratosphere vs. in the soil / ocean will add little to low level heating.

If the temperature decreases, ozone depletion will increase. It is because it accelerates at low temperature.

What is a natural phenomenon that maintains earths temperature range?

If the present greenhouse effect trend continues into the year 2100 earths annual average temperature could?

Due to the Greenhouse Effect, Earth's temperature is continually rising. If the trend does not change, the Earth's annual temperature will continue to rise, causing significant ecological problems.

What controls the climate and protects the Earth from harmful sun?

The atmosphere. The ozone layer absorbs UV radiation, and atmosphere also controls temperature through the greenhouse effect, which allows the earth's temperature to be suitable for life. If there was no greenhouse effect then the earths average temperature would be -14oC instead of the actual 15oC.

What planet temperature is closest to the earths?

Mercury has an average surface temperature (67°) closest to the Earths average surface temperature (14°C). The temperature on Mercury varies a lot though - you could argue that Mars is closer in temperature.

How does the increase in carbon dioxide emissions affect the earths natural cycle of temperature cycle?

It raises the temperature and makes it hotter through the greenhouse effect.

What is earths average temperature at sea level?

15C 59F

Why is dioxide important to life?

Carbon dioxide acts as a greenhouse gas and retains heat radiation from the sun, which, combined with other greenhouse gases helps to maintain the earths surface temperature. Without the presence of CO2 in the atmosphere, most of the solar radiation would not be retained and thus the surface temperature would be very low and unable to sustain human life.

How does the addition of more greenhouse gases over time affect earths average temperature?

Greenhouse gases absorb heat rising from the suface of the earth. The more greenhouse gases there are, the more heat is absorbed. This is what is happening now. By burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), we are adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and this is causing global warming.
