Mexico was occupied by France during the American Civil war.
Both the Confederacy and the US were aware of the invasion of Mexico by France and it did not cause either side to be concerned. Here is a brief summary of the events and its possible outcomes.During the US Civil War, France in 1863 invaded Mexico. Napoleon III was able to do this because of the Civil War. And, France should have known that this adventure, no matter what the outcome of the Civil War, was a disaster waiting to happen. Two events could have happened after France controlled Mexico. And, whereas hindsight is 20-20, what would have happened was immediately known to anyone with even a small degree of understanding geo-politics.A Event 1, Th e Confederacy wins its independence. Based on the talked about plans of Southern leaders, and the political reality of having a puppet State of France on its Southwestern border, the new Nation of the CSA would have invaded Mexico successfully. The South's ability to fight off the superior military forces of the United States, meant that the "new" Mexico would not last long. The South would even have the choice of letting Great Britain help out in ending a puppet state in Mexico.B. The US Civil War ends with the end of the Confederacy. Soon after the US places troops on the border with Mexico, demands an end to the puppet state. and France concedes without a fight.Event B happened.
I am sorry while as a Canadian it would be nice to think of France as an incident, it was not. ;) I think the question is did France take part in the cold war and did the cold war happen in France. Generally France is a NATO country and was actively involved in Opposing the USSR and its goals during the cold war. That would mean that there were incidents in France constituting that the cold war happened partially in France.
Spain. Later Mexico was occupied by France but won that war too.
Mexico. Shortly after the Civil War ended, Mexico threw the French out.
Mexico fell to Spanish conquistadors and became a Spanish overseas colony for 300 years,
During the course of the US Civil War, France set up a "kingdom" in Mexico. After the war, the United States demanded that France evacuate Mexico and placed an army on the Mexican - US border.
France vs. Mexico
As long as France was involved with an insurrection in Mexico, it could not intervene on the side of the South.
Mexico won. Cinco de mayo!
They lost.
It was the other way around: France began its attack against Mexico on December 8, 1861.
