To join the Roman army a man had to physically fit. The Romans preferred to recruit country men as opposed to the "city boys" who were considered too soft and not used to hard work. A man also had to be mentally fit and willing to obey orders. He also had to be freeborn. That's about all the qualifications needed.

What eqiutment did roman soldiers use?

Besides their body armor and helmets, they had their spear (pilim) knife,(pugio) shield(scutum). They also used various forms of artillery equipment, such as types of catapults that could hurl various kinds of nasty objects such as rocks, fire arrows, or larger arrows called bolts. They had slingers who used either stones or lead pellets, the forefathers or our bullets. But the most important piece of equipment a Roman soldier had was his dolabra, his digging tool.
