I believe they'd pay to ferry across rivers, or they'd float their wagons across.
why did the early pioneers settle near rivers or lakes
The pioneers would sometimes make a wax paste and water proof their wagons to float them across while making the animals swim across. Also, sometimes there would be Native Americans that would ferry them across for trade or money. If the rivers were very deep, they would make the animals swim and build a large flat boat called a scow to float themselves and their wagon(s) across.

With boat across the sea
They found jungles, rivers, plant life, and animal life. They kept a journal of what they found, sort of like the pioneers when they came across the plains.
how does sir Alexander Mackenzie get across the ocean or rivers
Pioneers would know how, otherwise they wouldn't be pioneers ;)
pioneers found high spots in the river to cross with their wagon

Pioneers used natural resources like water from rivers and streams to bathe and wash clothes. They also made their own soap from animal fat and lye. Sometimes they would also use herbs or wild plants for cleansing purposes.
Rivers were usually high with the melting snow water and Spring rains. They had to leave in early spring to make it across the plains and to miss the fall mountain snows. It took at least 6 months to get to the west. Many lost everything in the flooded rivers. Even today these rivers still reach flood stage imagine being in a wagon trying to cross one.
They bathe in the rivers and/or lakes! Men bathe with man, and women bathe with women!
