If the furnaces filter becomes blocked, airflow is reduced. Once airflow is restricted there is incomplete combustion resulting in increased levels of carbon monoxide. The heat exchanger will overheat since there is reduced airflow and the safety limit switch will cut off gas valve and blower.

Of course you can but I highly advise against it. Otherwise you are leaving some old dirty oil in the system. You are also leaving a dirty filter in place that may not be able to clean the oil properly. Want your engine to last then install a new filter at each oil change.
