It depends very much on the details of the problem. It's essentially impossible to answer a question as vague as this, since the "steps" would depend on what the problem WAS. If a particular program is giving me an error message, for example, I probably WOULDN'T check to make sure the computer was plugged in; whereas if the computer wouldn't start, that would be one of the FIRST things I checked.

It basically boils down to common sense, which is frighteningly rare.
