If a skunk is about to spray, it will stand on it's front legs and do a handstand.

Before i sprays, it will give you warnings. If a skunk feels threatened, they will hiss, stamp their feet and raise their tail as warning signs.

They can. But never for no reason. Maybe if it got REALLY mad. But it's obvious that if you make a skunk mad, it would just spray it's smelly oil at you. Or run the opposite dirrection. It's very likely though that you won't find a skunk running after anyone anytime soon.

What is the earliest age a skunk can spray?

I come into contact with baby skunks on a daily basis at a park which I visit. They are approximatey 6-8 weeks old and are quite adorable. I have noticed that even when I am within a couple of feet of them, they make no defensive gestures as do adult skunks I have encountered in the past. There is no foot stamping or tail raising--they simply run away when I get too close. So----not wanting an unpleasant surprise---I would really like to know at what age they are armed and ready. Thanks.

What does as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party mean?

Unless it has had its musk gland removed, a skunk would not be very welcome at a lawn party because it would be frightened by human presence and might because of this spray to protect itself from perceived danger. This possibility would drive the guests away from the party due to the rancorous aroma a skunk can produce. That would not be the desired situation of either the guests or especially the host. Therefore this phrase is an analogy implying that whatever is "as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party" is very unwelcome.
