I taught 5th grade for 20 years and there was not any one topic I liked. I often picked topics that related to other subjects . For instance I would use something out of history or a topic we had read in Weekly Reader . My main purpose to was to promote language, grammar, to meet the 5 areas of writing as required by state standards, and to have students think in creative and critical ways.
