70 AD
The Siege of Jerusalem in the year 70 was a decisive event in the First Jewish-Roman War, followed by the fall of Masada in 73. The Roman army, led by the future Emperor Titus, with Tiberius Julius Alexander as his second-in-command, besieged and conquered the city of Jerusalem, which had been occupied by its Jewish defenders in 66. The city and its famous Temple were completely destroyed. The destruction of the Temple is still mourned annually as the Jewish fast Tisha B'Av, and the Arch of Titus, depicting and celebrating the sack of Jerusalem and the Temple, still stands in Rome.
Jerusalem was not destroyed in 70 AD. The temple was destroyed. Much of the city remained after the final battle. One can read two messages in the destruction of the temple. One was that it actually was an accident that it was burnt, as the ancient writers claim. The other was that the destruction of the temple was a fulfillment of Jesus' prophesy.
The First Temple built by Solomon was destroyed by the Babylonians. The Second Temple built by Herod the Great was destroyed by the Romans.
Jerusalem was destroyed by General Titus in the year 70 CE (CE is more correct than AD, since Jesus was born in the year 2 BCE)
Titus ruled for a little over two years, from 79 to 81 AD. He was accounted a good ruler, but died of a fever after two years in office. He succeeded his father Vespasian as the Roman Emporer, and was succeeded by his brother Dornitian.
Jewish tradition places the Destruction of the Second Temple in the year 68 CE, not 70. See also:About the DestructionThe Jews and the RomansJewish traditional timeline
