Why do a continental and a polar cause a tornado?
The terminology here is a bit confused. In weather there are 4 basic types of large-scale air mass: Continental polar air masses come off the land in cold regions and are cool and dry. Maritime polar masses come off the ocean and are cool and somewhat moist. Continental tropical air masses come of the land from warm regions and are warm and dry. Finally maritime tropical masses come off of warm oceans and are warm and moist. When a continental polar air mass pushes into a maritime tropical air mass it forms a cold front. Since cold air is denser than warm air, the tropical air mass is forced upwards. This can trigger thunderstorms. Under the right conditions these storms can produce tornadoes.

What are Plate tectonics evidence?
The theory of plate tectonics has succumbed to the newer theory of continental drift. Scientists believe this theory today due to three main factors. First, the continents appear to fit together. When the continental shelves, as opposed to just the continents, are placed together, the fit appears uncanny. Second, the distribution of fossils is consistent with continental drift. Lastly, glacial deposits once covered parts of the earth that are currently tropical.ANSWER: The plate tectonics theory is relatively new and formulated only in the 1960s. The evidence listed above in the first answer can only support the continental drift theory which was developed by Alfred Wegener in 1912. Evidence that can support the plate tectonics theory are the age, depth of oceanic sediments, volcanic activity, geothermal gradient, gravity anomalies, paleomagnetism and seismologic evidence. If you are answering an exam question on evidence supporting plate tectonics, evidence supporting continental drift theory should only come later in your answer and should not be given too much emphasis, for the plate tectonics theory involves more than just the continental crust drifting around and cannot support the main hypotheses of the plate tectonics theory.

Alfred Wegener was a German weatherman (more specifically, a meteorologist at the University of Marburg) who wrote a book, "Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane," or "The Origin of Continents and Oceans" on the idea of Pangaea. This book came out in 1912 in Germany and 1915 in the USA, despite the First World War going on. Although Alfred Wegener is often recognized as being the originator of the idea of Pangaea, the American geologist Frank Bursley Taylor started theorizing about Pangaea in 1908. He did not, however, really go anywhere with this idea and didn't come up with the name "Pangaea". Alfred Wegener did.
